Doomtree Blowout @ Varsity Theater

Logistical nightmare ruins otherwise epic show.

This show would have been great, had the Varsity theater gotten their shit together and realized there would be tons of kiddies coming. First of all, I was informed at the show that you could have bought advance tickets, but this was not publicized anywhere else. Then, they opened the doors to let people in about a half hour before showtime, and there was a line around the block. It was probably around 0 degrees outside.

After waiting in line for an hour, we finally got in. I tried my best to get into the music, but at that point I was to tired from shivering and still cold inside the building, I couldn't enjoy the show at all. I finally ended up leaving about half way through, cold and defeated. Thanks, Varsity Theater.

Moral of the story, if you know a show is at the Varsity (a cool venue otherwise) is going to be huge, either get tickets ahead of time (indietickets.com) or just don't bother.

There the Brits go again, making sense and all
Friday, 12.9.2005

Does this make dizzyingly perfect sense to anyone else?

...evidence obtained through torture - no matter by whom - [is] not admissible in British courts.
Let's face it, the whole concept of torturing someone as a means to gather information (setting aside the fact it is disgustingly inhumane) is fatally flawed. Start torturing ME and I'll probably tell you just about anything you want to hear; true or not.

Also, at the point where people are being tortured in order to provide evidence for a trial, is the trial even valid anymore? What's the point of having a trial, and along with it the pretense of a civilized society, if the information at that trial is gathered in such a base and uncivilized way?

Sometimes the Brits just make sense.

Do you realize that if America was still under British rule every American (or Briterican in that case) would have access to free healthcare? And we wouldn't beat people into confessions.

Take us back... please!

Complacency Is Un-American
Thursday, 11.10.2005

Do you remember when broadcast journalists actually made a difference? Remember when they actually informed the public instead of clogging our airwaves with pretty faces and political rhetoric? Well, I don't either, because I was born in the early 80's, and grew up in an age when someone decided that broadcast media should make everyone paranoid and superficial instead of informed and cultured.

Well I saw a great movie the past weekend that reminded me things can be (and were) different. Check out Good Night, and Good Luck, about the conflict between Edward R. Murrow and Joeseph McCarthy. Not only was this movie inspiring in it's subject matter, but beautifully crafted as well. As the film used a great deal of actual black and white footage of senate meetings fomr the time, the whole film was shot in black and white, creating a seemless transition between present-day actors and McCarthyism-era footage. The acting was spot on as well.

If you're in the mood to be uplifted, visually wowed, and depressed about the state of the media today, check this film out.

Yay for PA
Wednesday, 11.9.2005

Finally! American's are coming to their senses. I don't know who thought intelligent design was a science in the first place, but Pennsylvania voters have (by removing some school board members) obviously realized that it's not. Check out this NY Times article.

On a related note: Pennsylvania is also kicking ass this week because Penn State dominated Wisconsin in College footbal, and the Steelers ALSO dominated the Packers in the NFL.

I know football doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, but voting fundamentalists out of office does. Congratulations to our fellow blue state!
